about

The Lyra-8 is a synthesizer made by Soma Laboratories, who's website describes it as "the unique organismic analogue synthesizer designed by Vlad Kreimer. “Organismic” means that LYRA uses some principles that lie in the base of living organisms. The way how LYRA’s modules interacting between each other and the behaviour of the instrument resembles a live conversation."

I've had my eye on one for years, but was always intimidated by it, until about a month ago where I was able to try one out at Signal Sounds in Glasgow. The way it's designed allows you to interact with it in such a unique way, and it sounds incredible. I was totally drawn into it's world and it's principles, and basically fell as much in love with it as is possible with a machine.

I've heard it said that as much as you play the Lyra, the Lyra also plays you. This is certainly the case. it was almost like playing with another musician. Not entirely predictable - but that can often be a good thing.

So I bought it and since then have spent many hours lost in it's ways. The act of playing on it opens up all sorts of ideas, as well as sort of slowing down your mind. it becomes like a meditative experience, moreso than any other synth I've had my hands on. It especially lends itself to longform improvisational pieces, which I love doing.

So this is a selection of tracks recorded over the last month, using only the Lyra as the sound source, along with a reverb and delay pedal with fairly straightforward settings. The were performed live without overdubs.

These are slow moving pieces, ideally suited to headphones and closed eyes, or speakers at a loud volume in a dark room. I hope you enjoy them.
